Axol the Axolotl

Axol the axolotl is a character designed in the image of the rare Mexican salamander. These endangered creatures live their whole life under water, have impressive regenerative abilities, and a lovable quirkiness that makes them way too adorable.

Type: Amphibian

Population: ~1200

Length: 12 inches

Habitat: Freshwater Rivers & Lakes

Scientific Name: Ambystoma Mexicanum

Status: Critically Endangered

In the past 20 years, the population of axolotls in the wild has decreased a lot. There are only 700 to 1,200 left! The main threat is loss of habitat due to urbanization.

Axolotls have a unique capability to regenerate (re-create) different parts of their body in the case they are lost or damaged. Axolotls can regenerate missing limbs, kidney, heart, lungs, and even their spine!
